China claims that the Xinjiang region faces insurgency from Islamist militants and separatists who try to drive a wedge between the ethnic Han Chinese majority and Muslim Uighurs. Practising Islam is forbidden in certain parts of the country as citizens frequently threatened with arrest if caught worshipping, growing a beard, wearing a Hijab – a headscarf which Muslim women feel is a part of their religion.
